Castello di Volpaia

Volpaia is a fortified Village of the 11th century located o the boarder between the Siena and Florence territory
The most important renaissance building is the Church of Sant'Eufrosino. Attributed to Michelozzo, it was deconsecrated in 1932 and declared a National Monument in 1981.
Volpaia gave the name to the Della Volpaia family: during the Renaissance Benvenuto and Lorenzo della Volpaia became famous. Not only was the latter friend of Leonardo da Vinci but their instruments are still on view at the Science Museums in Florence and Greenwich, as well as the Adler Planetarium in Chicago and Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
The first document that testifies the cultivation of vines in Volpaia is dated April 1st 1172
On May the 14th 1824, Volpaia was among the founders of the “Consortium for the Defense of the Typical Wine of Chianti and its Brand Name of Origin”.
The Stianti Mascheroni Family owns Volpaia since 1967. In 1997 Carlo Mascheroni – owner of Volpaia - was the first non-Tuscan president of the Consorzio vino Chianti Classico.
The cellars are integrated in the 11th century Village: churches and historical houses host the most modern equipments, all cellars are connected by an underground stainless steel pipeline.
All the aging cellars are located beneath the village where we have a constant temperature of 11-14 degrees Celsius.
