Gulfi

The name of the winery Gulfi comes from the small town of Chiaromonte Gulfi, located next to the farm. Why not call the winery the family name of the owner? The reason lies in the fact that all those who work at the Gulfi winery belong to one big "family", so Raffaelle Catania, who bought a piece of land in the Pacino region after the end of world War II, created a family without regard to surnames. In 1995, Vito Catania, the son of Raffaelle, inherits the family vineyards and immediately decides to work together with his friend and then already sensational oenologist, salvo Fotti. Having studied the vineyards available to Gulfi near Chiaromonte (in the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG), salvo confirms the possibility to create a unique wine on them, but Vito's idea-to create wines "Grand CRU" in Sicily, takes them to the southernmost part of Sicily, in the area of Pacino (Pachino).
The area near pakino and Noto is unique in that several tectonic plates converged on it many tens of millions of years ago, forming a volcano, and soil stratification. To date, this is manifested in a huge variety of soil types on a small plot of land. Such diversity, as well as the tradition to grow in these places the variety Nero d'avola (according to one version of Nero d'avola just came from the area of the city of Avola) led salvo and Vito to the idea of creating wines "Grand CRU" in Pacino. Moreover, there was already an informal CRU system in Pacino, the most prominent of which are San Lorenzo, Maccari, Baroni, and Boufaleffi.
Today Gulfi owns 70 hectares of vineyards in three regions of Sicily – near chiaromonte Gulfi, near Pacino and Noto, as well as Etna-and produces 13 types of wines, including four " CRU " from Pacino (San Lorenzo, Maccari, Baroni and Bufaleffi).
If we talk about the features of gulfi approaches to the creation of wines, all the basic principles can be expressed in the following words: organic winemaking, the complete absence of irrigation, each wine from a separate vineyard, the formation of vines for all red varieties in the form of gobelet (alberello). But one set of techniques will not be able to create great wines, you still need an idea that is embodied in wine.
Here is how Vito Catania expresses his idea: "We do not invent something new. Everything we did was here 2,000 years ago, and we just have to adapt the diligence and culture of our predecessors to the current time. We must respect the land we have been given because it is our future and the future of our children. We need to pass on to our children what our ancestors taught us»
