Dominio Basconcillos

Quite a young project Dominio Basconcillos was founded in 2001 and for its 15-year existence has received a lot of flattering reviews due to its unique location and careful and detailed winemaking. The idea of the project originated at the end of the 20th century when Jose Maria Basconcillos was in search of an untouched piece of land with an extreme continental climate for the production of excellent wines with the philosophy of organic winemaking. A suitable terroir was found on the site of a hunting estate, an area of 50 hectares, near the village of Gumiel de Izan on the northernmost point of the appellation with an altitude of 1000m above sea level. It was here that some of the first vineyards of the monastic order were seen, in the area of one of the highest vineyards Ribera del Duero. For planting the first vineyards were used not grafted vines varieties Tinta del Pais from the local districts Gumiel de Izan and Penaranda de Duero, this happened in 2001. Today the farm itself is managed by two daughters of the founder-Maria Jose and Carmen. All production is divided into 2 lines: organic Dominio Basconcillos and premium line Vina Magna. Quite diverse terroir economy is typical for the region. In the terroir of Basconcillos you can find everything from chalk and sand to clay and silt. Viticulture is 100% organic. The winery itself is built on the type of French Chateau is located in the center of the vineyards. Grapes are collected in plastic boxes with a volume of 16kg, completely separated from the ridges and each berry is carefully checked before it gets into the gravity pump. The oenologist of the economy is a native of Ribera del Duero-Francisco Barona, who graduated from the faculty of oenology in Bordeaux. Francisco tries in his wines to find a high concentration with a maximum level of freshness and balance, trying to squeeze everything out of a significant height above sea level, low pH berries, preserving everything with the help of careful and gravitational winemaking. Wines spend malolactic fermentation and aged in French oak barrels (30% new), the duration always depends on the conditions of the particular year of harvest. Dominio Basconcillos is considered to be the pioneers of organic and sustainable viticulture in the Ribera del Duero zone, who began these practices in 2004. there are no herbicide sprays and pesticides In the vineyard. The crop is harvested by hand and the collection takes place on a separate type of soil and a separate grape variety. A significant part of the vineyards planted Tempranillo variety, but also on the farm there are varieties of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 1000m above the level give a significant difference between day and night temperatures, constantly blowing winds and compliance with reduced yields (about 3 tons / ha) allows you to produce excellent wines.
