The fairly young Dominio Basconcillos project was founded in 2001 and for its 15-year existence has received many flattering reviews due to its unique location and careful and detailed winemaking. The idea of the project itself originated at the end of the 20th century when Jose Maria Basconcillos was in search of an untouched piece of land with an extreme continental climate for the production of excellent wines with the philosophy of organic winemaking. A suitable terroir was found on the site of a hunting estate with an area of 50 hectares, near the village of Gumiel de Izan at the northernmost point of the appellation itself with a height of 1000 m above sea level. It was here that one of the first vineyards of the monastery order was noticed, in the zone of one of the highest altitude vineyards of Ribera del Duero.
