Thorne & Daughters
Thorne & Daughters is a South African winemaking project that grew out of John Throne's years of international experience in restaurants, vineyards, and wineries. Trained as a mathematician and computer scientist, working with wine gradually became his true calling. After his first harvests in South Africa, working in Australia, France, and the UK, and studying viticulture and oenology at Plumpton College, he returned to South Africa, where he created the first Thorne & Daughters wines in 2013.
Today, the estate works with grapes from approximately 15 producers from various regions of the Western Cape—Bot River, Stellenbosch, Voor-Paardeberg, Swartland, Citrusdal Mountain, Franschhoek, and Overberg. This broad geographic scope was a conscious choice: the project initially wanted to avoid limiting itself to a single appellation. The primary criterion is not so much the specific location as the combination of three elements: people, place, and vines. Trusting relationships with winegrowers are especially important: the producer believes that this is what allows him to obtain raw materials of the required quality and fully express the potential of each plot.
