The word «d’estranquis» takes us back to the time of the war between Spain and France (1635-1659), when Catalonia was divided into two parts. If before the war the peasants had to give 10% of their crops to the feudal lord or the church, then during the war they were forced to give 50% in connection with military purposes. The peasants decided to outwit the Spanish government and began to hide half of the crop, so in the end they gave away about 15-25%, and kept the rest for themselves and sold something. The word «d’estranquis» was used by the gypsies who traded on the border of the Spanish and French parts of Catalonia to designate just such a contraband product that was traded under the counter.
