Krone

The family-run Krone winery was founded back in 1710 and is not only the very first winery in the Tulbagh region, but also the only winery specialising exclusively in the production of Methode Cap Classique - sparkling wines produced using the classic Champagne method with secondary fermentation in the bottle. All 100 hectares of vineyards are planted exclusively with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Nicolas Krone, the current owner of the winery, produced the first MCC under the name Krone Borealis in 1991. The cuvée is named after the constellation Corona Borealis. According to legend, Bacchus threw his golden crown with precious stones into the sky, from which this constellation was formed, to prove his love to Ariadne.

Krone is one of the most innovative wineries in South Africa, especially among MCC wine producers. Nicolas Crone has benefited greatly from his close links with the Moet and Mumm champagne houses. Crone is the only South African MCC house to have ever produced a cuvée under licence from a French champagne house (Mumm). After Nicolas Crone was voted the country's best MCC producer in 1995 by the Diner's Club, Georges Blanc of Mumm approached Nicolas Crone to produce a special cuvée called Cuvee Cap by Mumm for the southern hemisphere markets.
