Viña Mayu was founded in 2005 as the second fine wine producer in the Elqui Valley, the first being founded in 1998 by his father. Mauro Olivier was one of the pioneers of the Elqui Valley, he planted vines to produce fine wines and
collected grapes from various terroirs of the valley. This was a natural progression for Mauro, as he began working in his family's table grape vineyards at a young age and then moved into producing pisco at the family distillery.
In 2000, Mauro planted the first vines of Carménère and Syrah in the valley, and 5 years later, in 2005, he decided it was time to start his own wine project under the Mayu brand. Mayu is the ancient INCA name for the Milky Way, literally meaning "river of stars". Mayu Winery specializes exclusively in producing premium wines from the Elqui Valley with unique style and personality.
